PA Video Insight: MBS - Things ain’t what they used to be

Added 12th October 2016

Mortgage-backed securities are a different beast today to the structures available ahead of 2007-08 and with low yields and expensive valuations in other asset classes investors should include them in their search for alternative sources of returns.

Following the pain of 2007 and the sub-prime-led global financial crisis, US consumers as well as the mortgage market learned plenty of lessons. Consumers are far better placed nearly a decade on and the residential mortgage market is far healthier - gone are the days of securities backed by sub-prime assets.

This combination helps to reinforce the investment idea of mortgage-backed securities, with new issuance into a $7trn market of far superior quality than securities issued ahead of 2007.

GAM’s Gary Singleterry explains how they can provide the security of US treasuries with higher returns and the attractions of high yield bonds with lower volatility.
